Chelsea Odufu

Chelsea Odufu is a Guyanese Nigerian American award-winning filmmaker and visual artist working across narrative, experimental film, video art, installation, and photography. Odufu’s work is deeply concerned with how traditional aspects of Black culture are preserved in the face of urbanization and globalization. She frequently uses afro-futuristic imagery juxtaposed with archival footage to collapse the sense of time in her pieces.

Traveling the globe and directing since the age of fourteen, Odufu uses her worldly perspective to push back against antiquated perceptions of underrepresented communities. After graduating from NYU, she worked with Spike Lee on several projects, including Chi-Raq and the Netflix series adaptation of She's Gotta Have It. Her award-winning films “Ori Inu: In Search of Self” and “Black Lady Goddess” were screened at over 20 film festivals worldwide. She has directed content for brands including Target, Doc Marten, Gillette Venus, Chanel, Cadillac, and Fiverr, where she was chosen as the online marketplace’s Chief Digital Nomad. Her work has been featured on platforms such as Forbes, NY Times, Huffington Post, Afro-Punk, Okay Africa, Saint Heron, The Build Series, NBC News, and many more.

As a visual artist, Odufu was one of twelve artists selected in 2021 for Kehinde Wiley’s Black Rock Senegal Residency in Dakar, where she created a multi-channel video & sound installation that was exhibited at the Dakar Biennale. She has also exhibited her work at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center, Museum of Contemporary African Diasporic Art, Seattle Arts Museum, and the I A&A Hillyer Gallery. Odufu has created public art, including a video installation for the U.S. Embassy in Senegal and visual art for JP Morgan. She is the co-founder of Tech Afrique, an immersive audio-visual healing platform for BIPOC communities.
